    FAPAC 27th National Leadership Training Conference Team Visits Atlanta

    WASHINGTON DC - FAPAC’s 27th Annual National Leadership Training Conference will be held on April 30-May 4, 2012 at the Grand Hyatt Buckhead, Atlanta, Georgia.  FAPAC holds this conference to coincide with the Federal government’s observance of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The theme for 2012 is “Striving for Excellence in Leadership, Diversity and Inclusion”.  Dr. Kin Wong, President and Grace Spence, Conference Chair will visit Atlanta on March 22-24 to meet the community and volunteers. All interested community leaders are welcome to attend the public meeting on March 24 at the Grand Hyatt Atlanta at Buckhead. Light refreshment will be provided.

    The conference has been endorsed for many years by the Office of Personnel Management as appropriate for federal support and attendance.  The workshops and plenary sessions provide an excellent opportunity for critical leadership training and to understand regulations on EEO and learn the tools for moving up the career ladders. On May 2 Career Day students and veterans can attend special student program and the Veterans Forum free –pre-registration required (register today to avoid cutoff due to limited capacity). All registered attendees can visit the agency exhibits and career booths free.

    FAPAC is organized exclusively for educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. FAPAC is a non-profit, non-partisan organization representing the interests of over 155,000 civilian and military APA employees in the Federal and District of Columbia governments of all ranks, including GS and SES employees. FAPAC carried out its mission through the Annual National Leadership Training Conference, held during the month of May each year, one day workshops on special topics and through other training conducted by its chapters. FAPAC also provide recognition of outstanding performers through its Military and Civilian Award Programs.

    WASHINGTON DC – On January 28, 2012 FAPAC joined with the Asian American Government Executives Network (AAGEN) and the Pan-Pacific American Leaders and Mentors (PPALM) in a letter to Leon Panetta, Secretary of Defense, in expressing our concern about the continued incidence of hazing in the military leading to the death of Private Danny Chen despite the policy against bullying and hazing. The three organizations offered their assistance in finding solutions to the problem the root cause. The theme for the 2012 Asian American Heritage Month - “Striving for Excellence in Leadership, Diversity and Inclusion” was chosen by FAPAC recently to calling on managers and supervisors on the need to become leaders in view of the increasing diverse workforce in the federal government. The theme was to support the Executive Order on Diversity and Inclusion signed by President Obama on August 18, 2011.

    Education, mentoring and accountability are the key to change the culture that may be deep rooted. To this end FAPAC will have programming in its coming conference in Atlanta, to be held on April 30 – May 4, 2012 to the importance of diversity.

    STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE IN LEADERSHIP, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

    Theme for APA Heritage Month 2012  

    WASHINGTON DC - FAPAC announced the theme for the 2012 Asian American Heritage Month - “Striving for Excellence in Leadership, Diversity and Inclusion”. The theme was chosen to focus on the Executive Order on Diversity and Inclusion signed by President Obama on August 18, 2011. Dr. Kin Wong, President of FAPAC, also announced that FAPAC has established an Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity and Inclusion under its Chair Selina Lee to work with the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in its effort to implement the Executive Order. FAPAC will work with its partners, under the National Coalition for Equity in Public Service (NCEPS), in supporting the effort.     White House Internship Program:

    This hands-on program is designed to mentor and cultivate today’s young leaders, strengthen their understanding of the Executive Office and prepare them for future public service opportunities. Interns are placed in various offices throughout the White House, and are given varying tasks, such as conducting research, managing incoming inquiries, attending meetings, and writing memos.

     Application Due Date:   January 22, 2012 (for Summer 2012 Term: 5/29/12 - 8/10/12)

    White House Initiative on AAPIs Internship Program

    The WHIAAPI Internship Program offers students the opportunity to work on a wide range of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) issues, including education, health, sustainable neighborhoods, economic development, civil rights, and labor and employment.  In addition to assisting with research on those topics, interns will help write policy memos and proposals, coordinate events, and conduct outreach to national and local AAPI organizations, elected officials, and ethnic media outlets.

    Application Due Date:   March 15, 2012 (for Summer 2012 Term: 6/12 – 8/12) May 15, 2012 (for Fall 2012 Term: 8/12 – 12/12)

    Eligible Applicants:    Undergraduate/Graduate Students

    Compensation:         College credit, unpaid

    Application Materials:  Statement that describes (1) one issue that affects the AAPI community, (2) a strategy that you would implement at the Initiative to address it, and (3) the organizations and/or federal agencies with whom you would collaborate.

    Presidential Management Fellowship (PMF)

    The Presidential Management Fellowship Program is a flagship leadership development program for advanced degree candidates interested in federal government work. The Program attracts and selects the best candidates through a rigorous application and selection process – all with the intention of developing a cadre of potential government leaders.

    We are pleased to announce the launch of anew Senior Executive  Service
     (SES)  Development  Program:
    While the numbers of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific
    Islander federal government employees closely reflect the total
    population of AAPIs in the country, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians
    and Pacific Islander representation at SES, mid and senior level
    management remains low.

    In response, the Asian American Government Executives Network, with
    participation from the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and
    Pacific Islanders, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, and the U.S.
    Equal Employment Opportunity Commission launched  a  program  to
    identify  and  aid applicants in preparation for the SES selection
    process through  intensive  training, education,  and  mentoring.

    We also encourage federal employees to help AAGEN develop this new
    program by taking this survey:

    information to senior executives and leaders on the challenges and
    barriers facing Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, as well as other

    WASHINGTON DC - FAPAC applauded President Obama for signing a new Executive Order (E.O.) on Diversity & Inclusion on August 18 to promote diversity and inclusion in the federal government. The administration has been concerned about the lack of diversity in several areas of the federal government and the lack of consistent guidance and oversight from the Office of Personnel Management. 

    Dr. Kin Wong, President of FAPAC, recognized the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for its renewed efforts under the Director, John Berry, leading to the signing of the E.O.  FAPAC, along with its coalition partners under the National Coalition for Equity in Public Service (NCEPS), have worked with OPM to address these issues and called for the E. O.

    Of particular concern to FAPAC has been the serious lack of diversity in the Senior Executive Service.  FAPAC will continue to work with OPM to help develop the guidance necessary to implement the requirement of the E.O.
